The Leadership Institute for Women of Color Attorneys in Law & Business Inc. (LIWOCA) seeks applications from women of color law students for its 2009 scholarship awards. A minimum of five $3,000 scholarships will be awarded. Applicants must 1) have completed at least one year of law school; 2) are attending an accredited law school in the U.S. at the time of their application; 3) are "in good standing" in their law schools; 4) are citizens of the U.S.; 5) have completed the scholarship application and submitted an official transcript; and 6) have demonstrated a commitment to the profession and are active in their community and law school. We are now accepting applications for the Frederick Douglass Moot Court Competition Specialist. As National Director of the FDMCC, I am specifically looking for applicants who are well organized, not afraid of research, willing to travel to some of the regional competitions and love Fred Doug! Former competitors/regional organizers are strongly encouraged to apply. Preferably, I would like to work with a 2L or 3L but will accept applications from all interested law students. The role begins this summer to help craft the problem!

This is an excellent opportunity for writing, research, and community development. It's also a great way to get involved with the National Board and continue to improve the caliber of competition. Law Prof Sues Students, Says They Defamed Him by Calling Him a Racist

A constitutional law professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock has filed a defamation suit against two students that says they wrongly accused him of being a racist.
The suit by Richard Peltz says he took part in a legitimate debate on affirmative action at the invitation of the Black Law Students Association, the New York Times reports. The two student defendants, Valerie Nation and Chrishuana Clark, are 3Ls.
Besides the students, the suit names the local chapter of the student association, an association of black lawyers called the W. Harold Flowers Law Society in Little Rock, and the law society's president, Eric Buchanan.
Members of the law students association had complained in a March 2007 letter to the law school dean about a 2005 incident in which Peltz showed a satirical article from the Onion about the death of Rosa Parks, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports. He also was accused of criticizing affirmative action and promising to award an extra point to black students who scored the same as whites on an exam.
The W. Harold Flowers Law Society had supported the students.
The Democrat-Gazette obtained internal e-mails about the incidents under the Freedom of Information Act.
In one of them, Peltz wrote: “I would like know when these students will be told that libel and slander is not the way for them to earn respect and to demonstrate merit. It seems that they are able to complain, to accuse, to offend, without end, and everyone is expected just to take it. My students, my best students, our law review editors, are being bad-mouthed not only in the school, but in law firms and practice circles too. But no one in authority at UALR seems to be looking out for them, and they know it. Well, let’s see what kind of alumni relations develop from that experience.”
Peltz said in an internal complaint filed with the school that the 2005 incident had already been resolved, but it was reopened because he supported a law review member who was criticized for failing to appoint black students to the editorial board. Two black students traveling for a moot court competition weren’t able to attend a “meet-and-greet” for interested applicants and were not selected for the board.
Nation commented on the suit in an e-mail to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. “I am shocked and disheartened to learn that I have been sued by one of my professors,” she wrote.

Michelle Gallimore, a 2L at Florida Coastal and is a native from New York. In the Spring of 1999, Ms. Gallimore graduated from John Jay College of Criminal Justice where she majored in Legal Studies. Following graduation, Ms. Gallimore secured employment with the New York City Department of Homeless Service where she served as a Community Assistant. Within this capacity, Ms. Gallimore worked directly with victims of domestic violence and homeless families to determine their eligibility for emergency housing assistance.Beginning, this May, Ms. Gallimore will begin serving as the SRBLSA Sub-Region Four Director. Within this capacity, Ms. Gallimore is primarily responsible for facilitating communications between the NBLSA executive board and the presidents of the SRBLSA chapters throughout Florida and Puerto Rico. Ms. Gallimore is further responsible for coordinating the 2009 SRBLSA Academic Retreat which will focus on the need for sustained activism in light of political and social changes to come.

I will be the opening speaker.

The program is great and has been in existence for the past 11 years. It meets weekly (Wednesday nights) and has been helpful for students preparing for the bar exam. Each student gets assigned a attorney mentor/tutor who reviews their essays weekly.

It will be offered again in the summer. So please post this information for your third years that will be studying in the Miami area.

Annual Minority Picnic in the Miami area on October 27 @12:00.

The minority picnic is an annual event started by Atty Kozyak and his South Florida firm to address the needs of minority law students throughout the state in terms of connecting with majority firms, partners, etc. There are students there from basically every law school breaking bread with and “meeting and greeting” hiring partners and other lawyers from large & small law firms (not just in South Florida), corporations, judges (there are always a lot of them there), etc. The atmosphere is very informal but inviting, and the folks there are definitely about the business of breaking down barriers between majority law firms and minority students and promoting “equal opportunity.” Justice Quince and June McKinney always attend, and I’ve seen other lawyers representing Tallahassee firms there, too.

The National Black Law Students Association Calls For Justice in the Jena Six Case

In past weeks and months we have watched events unfold in Jena, Louisiana with heavy hearts. In response to a racial incident arising from nooses being hung from a tree at the local high school, a group of six African-American students got into a fight with a white student, who allegedly had been racially taunting black students in support of the students who hung the nooses. Allegedly, the white student was taken to the hospital treated, released, and reportedly attended a social function later that evening.

While the National Black Law Students Association does not condone violence, the actions of the Jena District Attorney and the Judge in this case have amounted to a gross miscarriage of justice. The six African-American students involved in the altercation were initially charged with attempted second degree murder. On the morning of the trial, the District Attorney reduced the charges from attempted second degree murder to second degree aggravated battery and conspiracy. Aggravated battery in Louisiana law demands the attack be with a dangerous weapon. The prosecutor was allowed to argue to the jury that the tennis shoes worn by Mychal Bell, one of the defendants, could be considered a dangerous weapon.

Therefore, the National Black Law Student urges the Judge to consider all the factors surrounding these events during sentencing of Mychal Bell, the first of the six students to be tried. Additionally, we appeal to the Jena District Attorney, Reed Walters, to drop the charges against the remaining five students.

We are also calling on the Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco and Attorney General Charles C. Foti, Jr to intervene in the Jena Six case to ensure that the defendants’ constitutional right to a fair trial is ensured. The National Black Law Students Association is working with the ACLU of Louisiana to provide pro bono assistance to Mychal Bell and the other defendants in the Jena Six case.

You can contribute to this cause in a variety of ways such as:

1) Traveling to Jena, Louisiana on September 20th for a large protest against conviction of Mychal Bell. This event coincides with the National Academic Retreat in New Orleans and NBLSA may be able to help coordinate transportation to Jena from New Orleans. If you are interested in attending this event please contact Jared Boyd at

2) Writing a letter to Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco and State Attorney General
Charles C. Foti, Jr to intervene in the Jena Six case. A letter can be emailed to Governor Blanco at contact@la.gov and the State Attorney General can be contacted at Executive@ag.state.la.us.

The SRBLSA Job Fair student bidding process is open on the easelaw website and the deadline for student registration and bidding is this upcoming Tuesday, August 14 at 11:59pm. There are currently 14 employers registered for the SRBLSA Job Fair and a fifteenth employer, Bradley Arant Rose & White LLP of Birmingham, AL will be adding its schedule on Monday, August 13, 2007. Also, please check the easelaw website frequently for updates, including additional employers that may register later in the process.

There is no limit on the amount of bids that each student can place and employers will select who they want to interview based on the documents that you, the student, have uploaded onto the easelaw system. Thank you for your interest in this year`s SRBLSA Job Fair and please be on the look out for an e-mail with the agenda for the 2007 Third Annual SRBLSA Job Fair.

We are asking our members to contact Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker in efforts to consent to Genarlow Wilson’s habeas petition. Genarlow Wilson is a Georgia teen who was convicted of Aggravated Child Molestation for a voluntary act of oral sex with another teenager.

At the time of the alleged crime, Wilson was seventeen and the alleged victim was fifteen.
Along with the label “child molester” which will require him throughout his life to be on a sexual offender registry, Genarlow received a sentence of eleven years — a mandatory 10 years in prison and 1 year on probation.

On July 1, 2006, Georgia passed legislation ensuring that no teen prosecuted for consensual oral sex can receive more than a 12 month sentence or be required to register as a sex offender. While NBLSA applauds the Georgia legislature for rectifying the law that placed Genarlow Wilson in prison, we cannot remain idle until he is free.

Genarlow Wilson will be filing a habeas petition to seek his freedom from prison and to be removed from the sex offender registry. A habeas is a civil action which claims that a defendant is being unlawfully incarcerated. In Georgia, the Attorney General's office responds to this type of legal action. We are calling on the Attorney General of Georgia, Thurbert Baker to use his power to act justly, and review and consent to Wilson's habeas petition. Dear Membership:

I am writing in regards to the recent comments by Don Imus about the Rutgers Women Basketball Team. (See http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036713/ ). Your national board is taking swift action on this matter. We have contacted the National Association of Black Journalist, MSNBC, and Westwood One concerning the issue. We have issued a press release concerning the issue. See attached document.

While Mr. Imus's comments did not violate any laws, we have the power to stand up when an assault is made on the black community. Taking a stance on this issue falls squarely in line with our theme for this year and our founding purpose: "40 Years of History: Ensuring Inseverability." In addition to taking a public stance, NBLSA chapters may individually take action.

On a local level, NBLSA chapters can send a message directly to MSNBC and Imus. The Young Black Professional Guide has a form directly linked to MSNBC and Imus. (See http://ybpguide.com/contact-msnbc-and-imus). If your chapter would like to make a comment on this issue, you may sign your chapter name under the "name" field, and send a message directly to MSNBC and Imus.While instances like this may be viewed as reactionary politics by some, we must keep in mind the broader implications of accepting a two-week suspension for behavior such as Mr. Imus. I would encourage the membership to stay intensified not only concerning issues such as this, but our key initiatives for the upcoming year.

On Monday March 19, 2007, the University of Miami School of Law will hold a symposium on the twentieth anniversary of McCleskey v. Kemp, where a panel of distinguished legal scholars, including Professor David Baldus, will explore the legacy of the McCleskey decision and whether it ultimately created an impenetrable barrier to the use of statistics in the context of the death penalty. Greetings SRBLSA!

As everyone returns to our respective campuses, I wanted to offer my sincere thanks for a successful conference. I am hopeful that you enjoyed the sunshine, the beaches, and most importantly the convention seminars and programs. SRBLSA conventions always feel like a family reunion, and this one was no exception. As I mentioned in my farewell address, we as a region have a lot to be proud of. I am incredibly honored for the opportunity to have served as your Chair for the last year and am confident that the SRBLSA Chair-Elect, Brian Baptiste will continue the tradition of purposeful leadership and excellence that the South is accustomed to.

In the midst of the festivities on Saturday, I neglected to mention an exciting opportunity for SRBLSA students. We have created a scholarship to assist students who want to participate in the Matchmakers for Justice project. If you recall, Morgan Williams from the Student Hurricaine Network, discussed this exciting project at the Damali Booker Prayer Breakfast on Friday. In an effort to continue our purposeful activities in response to Katrina, SRBLSA we will provide $200 travel costs for 5 SRBLSA students to travel to New Orleans to particpate in this exciting program. Please see the attached documents for further information about the program.

To date, the Student Hurricane Network has recieved 100 applications for the 50 available spots for the program. I am pleased to announce that through a partnership between SRBLSA and SHN, 5 of the available spots are reserved for SRBLSA members.

Donald Q. Cochran

Originally from Columbia, Missouri, Professor Cochran holds both an undergraduate and law degree from Vanderbilt University.
After graduating from law school, Professor Cochran headed to Atlanta where he was a law clerk to United States District Judge Julie Carnes. In 1993, he moved to Birmingham to assume a position as a deputy district attorney for Jefferson County, Alabama. As part of the special prosecutions unit, dedicated to sex crimes and homicides, he handled approximately 70 jury trials including 16 capital murder cases.

In 1998, Professor Cochran moved to a position as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. He successfully prosecuted a number of high profile criminal cases including the 1963 Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bomber, Bobby Frank Cherry. For his work in the Sixteenth Street Church Bombing Case, Professor Cochran received the Directors award and was the subject of a feature story in the Vanderbilt Lawyer.

One of Professor Cochran’s great strengths as a practicing lawyer was his ability to integrate technology into the presentation of a case. He has developed and teaches an Advanced Trial Advocacy course which stresses the use of technology. He also teaches Basic Trial Advocacy and Criminal law.

Legal, Community and Business Activities

This year, Florida attorneys and other volunteers will be doing the work protecting our elections. This is a nonpartisan effort. Attorneys may volunteer to answer calls that come in on the EP hotline from voters and volunteers in the field or they may work at precinct(s) to make sure that the polls open on time and that voters are allowed to vote with the proper identification, and to help resolve voting issues and report any irregularities that the volunteer witnesses.

All volunteers will receive training before Election Day. The Election Protection Trainings will be Sunday, November 5th @ 6 – 9 p.m and Monday, November 6th @ 6 – 9 p.m. at the People for the American Way Foundation, 2915 Biscayne Blvd, Suite 210, Miami, Florida Volunteers may work for any period of time on Election Day between 7 a.m. – 7 p.m., or all day.

Individuals interested in volunteering may register as an Election Protection volunteer at www.866ourvote.com. The strength and breadth of the Florida Election Protection program is limited only by the number of people who volunteer.

Greetings SRBLSA!

This has been an extremely busy semester! I'd like to congratulate those individuals who have accepted job offers for next year, offer good luck to those who are still searching and well wishes to the 1L's who are preparing for first semester exams.

Additionally, I was extremely pleased with the turnout on the first ever Presidents Conference Call that was held on October 19th. As a reminder, there are several NBLSA/SRBLSA deadlines approaching

1. Deadline to lock in Miami Convention Early Bird Registration Rates Nov 1, 2006. If your school has requested funding, and are awaiting a check, please forward a copy of the check request to Jarrett Tyus at jtyus3@gmail.com, to ensure that your chapter can take advantage of the early bird rate.
REMEMBER, You can lock in the early bird rate, by making a $50 deposit. Registration can be accessed online at http://www.acteva.com/booking.cfm?bevaid=118760.

Additionally, all persons who are registered early, are entered in a raffle to win a prize valued at $200. We will announce the winner and prize shortly.

Rodney Pulliam Memorial Scholarship
Application Deadline: November 1, 2006

PURPOSE
The Executive Board is proud to announce the Rodney Pulliam Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is in honor of, Rodney Pulliam, who served as our National Chair as for the 1998-1999 academic year. Mr. Pulliam was an inspiration to all who knew him in service as a minister, husband, father, community activist, community servant and attorney. The scholarship shall be awarded in the amount of $500.00 to be used exclusively towards a Bar/Bri Bar preparation course. Thirty (30) scholarships in total with a break down of five (5) scholarships per region, representative of the Western, Rocky Mountain, Southern, Midwest, Mid Atlantic and Northeast Regions.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
This scholarship will be awarded in the form of a $500.00 BARBRI certificate to thirty (30) recipients (five (5) from each of the six (6) NBLSA regions). Each recipient must be a second (2L) or third (3L) year law student. Applicants must write an essay addressing the issue posed by the essay question.

ESSAY QUESTION:
Do you feel that Affirmative Action has outlived its usefulness with regard to the African American community? If so, is there any need for the legal community to act in order to change it? If not, what else should the legal community focus on outside of the current scope of Affirmative Action in order to increase the higher educational opportunities for African American students?
The winning essay will be chosen on purpose, practicality, content, grammar and style. The essay must not exceed 1000 words, be typed, and be double-spaced on 8 ½" x 11" paper.

CRITERIA

In order to be considered for the scholarship, please submit the following:

Four (4) copies of your essay. Do NOT put your name or any identifying information on any page of the essay.
A letter from your chapter President or Treasurer certifying that you are a dues paying member for the 2006-2007 school year.
Letter from your law school certifying that you are an eligible J.D. candidate for the 2006-2007 school year; or will become and eligible candidate before December 2007.

SELECTION PROCESS
Members of the NBLSA Board shall select the scholarship recipients. All proposals must be postmarked on or before Wednesday, November 1, 2006. All recipients will be notified by December 1, 2006 of their award and will be invited to attend the National Convention in Atlanta, GA at the recipient’s expense. Attendance at the convention is not a requirement to enter the contest. Please duplicate the application as necessary.

Nelson Mandela Scholarship
Application Deadline: November 1, 2006

PURPOSE
The Executive Board of the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) is pleased to announce the annual Nelson Mandela Scholarship. The scholarship’s namesake is the famed South African civil rights activities and political leader. Mr. Mandela has dedicated his life to liberating the people of South Africa from the oppressive hands of apartheid and segregation. The liberation efforts of Mr. Mandela are an inspiration to the members of NBLSA, which is why we choose to award this scholarship in his name. NBLSA takes great pride in the spirit of Mr. Mandela’s efforts to improve the state of affairs of Black people in South Africa.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
The scholarship is awarded on an annual basis to six (6) African-American college students/graduates (one students from each NBLSA region) who plan to enter law school in the United States in the Spring of 2007 or Fall of 2007 and who will be first year law students, and to first year (1L) law students who entered law school during the Fall of 2006, and are currently first year law students. A $1000 monetary award and a certificate will be given to each student. The scholarship will provide financial support for award and a certificate will be given to each student. The scholarship will provide financial support for those whose financial condition is minimal. The scholarship can be used by the student in whatever capacity need be. Applicants must write a proposal addressing the issue raised by the essay question:

ESSAY QUESTION
The United States government has recognized the violence, slaughter, rape, starvation and displacement of the Sudanese people in Darfur as "genocide". What role, if any, should the United States government play in eliminating this situation and why?
The winning essay will be chosen on content, grammar and style. The essay must be the completed product of the entrant. The proposal must be between 500 and 1000 words, typed, and double-spaced on 8 ½” x 11” paper.

CRITERIA

Four (4) copy of your essay (between 500 and 1000 words). Put your name and address information on the cover sheet of the essay. (Do NOT put your name or any identifying information on any page of the essay)
A resume and two (2) letters of recommendation
An official transcript from all undergraduate institutions and law schools.
Must submit verification of acceptance to law school for the Spring or Fall 2006 or letter from your law school that you are a current first year student who entered law school in the Fall of 2006.
Must include community service, future career plans, and extracurricular activities.

SELECTION PROCESS

The scholarship is named after the late Sandy Brown, a past NBLSA western regional director. Two (2) monetary awards (not less than $500) will be given commemorative of Ms. Brown. Great news!!!! The Southern Region Executive Board is extending a SPECIAL OFFER for all participants who register during the early registration period for the 36th Annual SRBLSA convention! SRBLSA is allowing participants to submit a $50 deposit in order to reserve their spot at the SRBLSA Convention and still receive the early registration fee of $115.
All persons who register early for the convention may mail/register online with a $50 placeholder fee, postmarked by no later than November 1, 2006,and lock in the early convention registration fee of $115. The remaining balance ($65) for the early convention registration fee must be postmarked/paid by December 1, 2006.
Those who wish to take advantage of this special offer must submit their $50 check payment along with their completed registration and fees form or have the payment made online. You must mark the fees form to indicate that you are registering for the early registration rate of $115.
